Client Install Guide

This server uses the 3.3.5a (Build 12340) World of Warcraft client and the realm address: set realmlist wow.flyingcircus.ca
Important: WotLK Classic / modern Battle.net clients will not work here. You need the original WotLK-era 3.3.5a (12340) client.

1) Get the correct client

I can’t provide links to unofficial downloads, like this one on github which seems to work well. The safest approach is to start from a legally obtained copy of WoW, then patch to 3.3.5a (Build 12340) (build 12340), or use a backed-up installer you already own.

What you need

  • World of Warcraft patched to 3.3.5a (Build 12340)
  • Enough disk space (classic clients are usually ~15 GB depending on your install)
  • A folder you can write to (avoid Program Files if you hit permission issues)
Tip: Keep a clean “base client” backup once you have it working. It makes future fixes painless.

Quick check: what version am I running?

Launch the game, then look at the bottom-left of the login screen. It should show: 3.3.5 (12340).

2) Set your realmlist

You’ll edit realmlist.wtf to point the client at this realm.

Put this in realmlist.wtf

set realmlist wow.flyingcircus.ca
Important: Make sure it’s the only set realmlist line in the file. If there are multiple, the client can behave unpredictably.

Windows path (most common)

…\World of Warcraft\Data\enUS\realmlist.wtf

Some installs use enGB or another locale folder instead of enUS.

macOS path

World of Warcraft.app/Contents/Resources/Data/enUS/realmlist.wtf

If you don’t see enUS, look for your locale (ex: enGB).

3) First login

  1. Run the game
  2. Confirm version is 3.3.5 (12340) on the login screen
  3. Log in with your account
Optional: Run WoW as Administrator (Windows) if you can’t save changes in the client folder.

Troubleshooting

“Wrong version” or “incompatible”

  • Double-check you’re on 3.3.5 (12340) (not WotLK Classic)
  • Make sure your realmlist.wtf is in the correct locale folder

It keeps connecting to another server

  • Search your WoW folder for other copies of realmlist.wtf and update the active one
  • Ensure there’s only one set realmlist line

Can’t save realmlist changes

  • Make sure realmlist.wtf is not set to “Read-only”
  • Move the WoW folder somewhere writable (ex: C:\Games\WoW335a\)
Security note: Only download clients from sources you trust and have rights to use. Avoid random “repack” executables.
